Hjulmand is Lion
News signing from Denmark
Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand is the latest signing for Sporting CP, having signed a five-year contract, the Portuguese top-flight club announced, after paying €18 million to Lecce.
At 24 years old, Hjulmand becomes the second most expensive signing in Sporting’s history, only behind Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres, who joined earlier this transfer window from Coventry City for €20 million.
He is also the second Danish player ever to wear the green and white shirt, following legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who represented the club between 1999 and 2001.
The defensive midfielder began his career at FC Copenhagen, before moving to Austria to play for Admira Wacker in 2018. In January 2021, he joined Lecce for €170,000 while the team was still in Serie B, Italy’s second division.
Since then, he made 95 appearances, helping Lecce achieve promotion to Serie A in 2022, and was later named team captain in the following season.
Hjulmand is Sporting’s second signing for the 2023/24 season, following the arrival of Viktor Gyökeres.
