Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand is the latest signing for Sporting CP, having joined the Portuguese top-flight club on a five-year contract. Sporting confirmed that they paid €18 million to secure the services of the 24-year-old, making him the second most expensive signing in the club’s history, only behind Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres, who arrived earlier this transfer window from Coventry City for €20 million.

Hjulmand becomes only the second Danish player ever to wear the green and white shirt, following the legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who represented the club between 1999 and 2001. This connection to a historic figure in Sporting’s past highlights the significance of Hjulmand’s arrival and the high expectations surrounding his role in the team.

The defensive midfielder began his professional career at FC Copenhagen, where he developed a reputation for tactical intelligence, precise passing, and leadership on the pitch. In 2018, he moved to Austria to play for Admira Wacker, gaining valuable international experience. His career took a significant step forward in January 2021, when he joined Lecce in Italy’s Serie B for a relatively modest fee of €170,000. Hjulmand quickly established himself as a key player, making 95 appearances, helping Lecce achieve promotion to Serie A in 2022, and being named team captain in the following season, underscoring his leadership qualities and influence on the field.

Sporting CP’s acquisition of Hjulmand reflects the club’s strategy of investing in young, high-potential talent with proven leadership experience. Known for his defensive capabilities, ball-winning skills, and composure under pressure, Hjulmand is expected to strengthen the midfield, provide stability, and act as a bridge between defense and attack. His arrival complements the club’s previous signing of Gyökeres, reinforcing both defensive solidity and attacking options for the upcoming season.

With his blend of tactical awareness, physical presence, and international experience, Hjulmand is poised to make an immediate impact at Estádio José Alvalade. Fans will be eager to see how he adapts to Portuguese football, how he meshes with his new teammates, and whether he can help Sporting challenge for domestic and European honours.
