Maxi Araujo is Lion
New signing from Uruguay
Maxi Araújo is officially a Sporting player. The winger and forward arrived in Lisbon last Sunday and has now been confirmed as the Lions’ latest signing, joining the club from Toluca. This marks his first European adventure, and the Uruguayan is entering a significant step in his career, with a release clause set at a remarkable 80 million euros. The deal was completed for approximately 14 million euros, covering the full transfer of his rights, reflecting Sporting’s belief in his potential to make an immediate impact.
The 24-year-old signed a contract until 2029, securing a long-term future with the Portuguese giants. This transfer also comes in the context of another negotiation between the two clubs during this window: Paulinho, a key player, moved in the opposite direction to the Mexican club Toluca. Araújo’s arrival is expected to strengthen Sporting’s attacking options, adding pace, technical ability, and international experience to the squad.
A 14-time international, Maxi Araújo has been a trusted figure under Marcelo Bielsa in the recent renewal of the Uruguayan national team. He was also part of the squad for the latest Copa América, gaining valuable experience against some of the best players in South America. His versatility as a winger allows him to play on either flank, while his ability to cut inside and contribute goals makes him a dangerous weapon in the final third.
Araújo becomes the eighth Uruguayan to don Sporting’s shirt, joining a select group of players who have made the journey from South America to Lisbon with the club. Having Franco Israel, his national team teammate, already in the squad will help him settle quickly, providing a familiar presence in a new environment.
With this signing, Sporting clearly demonstrates its ambition to compete at the highest level both domestically and in European competitions. Maxi Araújo’s combination of skill, international experience, and youthful energy could be the catalyst the team needs to elevate its attacking prowess. Fans will be eager to see how he adapts to Portuguese football and how quickly he can make an impact at Estádio José Alvalade.
